I’m genuinely stunned that this song hasn’t made the list much sooner than the 200 mark.
The album from which it’s drawn, Passenger, has been in my top twenty albums of all time for almost decade. This song, in particular, has been an anthem of mine for years, one I return to when kicked to the ground. There’s a simple beauty to the lyrics, a message of hope in darkness. And right now, where I’m desperately looking for a new strategy in this game, a new way to escape – for once and for all, this time – it’s right to come back to the arms of this musical shelter from the storm.
Life hurts. It’s always hurt me. But it has small moments of joy, and I always manage to keep crawling, even when I can’t stand. I’m falling again, but it’s okay. It has to be. I will find a way back.
It seems so far to go
It took so long to get here
Now I’m saying things I swore I’d never say
And I’m afraid again
I thought I had it in me
I used to be so sure
There I was stronger than ever
Here I am blaming the hurt
And if I fall
I will find a way back to my hands
I’m the only one who can help me find my feet
Again
Sweet little fighter
Sweet little scar
Sweet little fire in my heart
It seems so easy now
Everything I dreamed about when I was a child
It looks like a good place here
So I think I’ll stay for awhile
And if I fall
I will find a way back to my hands
I’m the only one who can help me find my feet
Again
Sweet little fighter
Sweet little scar
Sweet little fire in my heart
You came here screaming
And never stopped to listen to your one and only prayer
A place for you somewhere…
