Nuit Blanche! My favourite festival of the year…
For those not familiar with the concept, Nuit Blanche translates to “White Night”. It began in Paris, and it’s basically a night where the entire city is awake and alive, roaming free art on the streets. Performance art, sculpture, music, painting… Everything is fair game.
Toronto’s mayor, David Miller, loved the idea so much he brought it here 4 years ago for a one-time run. It was far more successful than anticipated, drawing almost half a million people out into the night. I have never missed Nuit Blanche and don’t ever plan to.
Some of the exhibits blow or take an extremely BROAD view of what constitutes art, but there’s always plenty to keep me amused, awed, moved or moving around to a beat. The feeling of roaming the streets until the sun comes up is unlike any other; it’s such a different world when a million people are roaming and taking in art, many of whom might usually never bother with it.
In a silly tribute, an oldie!
