365 Days of Music: Day Eight

Day Eight:  15 Step – Radiohead

Sometimes, a song sticks in your head for reasons of pure melody, only to become more meaningful later.  I woke up with this song, the first Radiohead track to hook me since Ok Computer, and planned on it being today’s track… Only for the lyrics to become painfully relevant.

I don’t care what anyone says; if you love someone, or feel passionate about something, silence is not how you respond to such important cornerstones in your life.  When you are enraged, you at least can say why you burn.  When that passion is gone, you still comment on its disappearance.

Anything less is pure conflict avoidance and cowardice that betrays an emotional immaturity I cannot fathom.  To quote the subject of the song today, “Who does that?”

You do, apparently.

How come I end up where I started
How come I end up where I went wrong
Won’t take my eyes off the ball again
You reel me out and you cut the string.

How come I end up where I started
How come I end up where I went wrong
Won’t take my eyes off the ball again
First you reel me out and then you cut the string

You used to be all right
What happened?
Did the cat get your tongue?
Did your string come undone?
One by one
One by one
It comes to us all
It’s as soft as your pillow

You used to be all right
What happened?
Et cetera et cetera
Friends forever!
Fifteen steps
Then a sheer drop

How come I end up where I started?
How come I end up where I went wrong
Won’t take my eyes off the ball again
You reel me out and you cut the string.
